They also no longer take the move/shoot penalty on their guns, a nice upside. 8th Edition, Acts of … Dreadnoughts got pretty light point changes, and the old staple of the Astral Aim sniper Vendread is probably still semi-fine, maybe even a bit better (though also totally skippable). So definitely dont get excited until we know. 0. The biggest thing driving that is the Smite change – the Warp Charge for Smites cast by Grey Knights now increments like for everyone else. Grey Knights, Review, Ritual of the Damned, tactica. Being ObSec, tough and deep-strikable is a great combination too, and I think there’s potentially a use case for these both to fill out mandatory troop slots and as a replacement for a second Paladin bomb to free up some points. The eventual winner lost game 3. The 8th Barrie Bash had Grey Knights strike from behind and pull out a first-place win from Genestealer Cults. Two big changes have hurt Grey Knights. First, Chaos Space Marines & Grey Knights don’t get an extra wound. The Elite slot in Grey Knights is pretty wide, but quite a bit of it can be written off straight away. I’d probably say, on balance, that having dug in to write this I’m a bit more pessimistic than I was immediately after reviewing Chapter Approved – although they got a light treatment in point changes, they were already up against it enough for that to hit pretty hard, and while the diminished utility of Strike Marines frees you up for other options, you do lose board and power redundancy in the process. It definitely re-affirms my belief that trying to do two Paladin bombs is probably dead, as you just don’t have the quality in the supporting units any more to make it worth it once you’ve spent an extra 120pts on the models. is the ITC Rep for Illinois and the surrounding states, Co-Admin for the Chicago Land 40k Facebook Page, Author, and a top 3 ITC Sisters player the past 3 ITC seasons. Very experience guy. Don’t miss all our other 9th edition launch coverage including battle reports and tactics videos covering nearly all factions in the game. By using abilities like Gate of Infinity and Edict Imperator to push early, you also force them to commit to trying to engage your bigger units early on when they’re still at full power, certainly not the most comfortable position to be in when against this army. Games Workshop slaps some Armies in the face while giving handouts to others. Grey Knights Chapter Colour Scheme. Blast says, “If a blast weapon targets a unit that has between 6 and 10 models, it always makes a minimum of 3 attacks.” Finally Paladins, the terror of late 8th. Does moving to a single battalion mean reducing the number of strike squads or is there more to it than that? Competitive 40k is nowhere near as physical as climbing a mountain but there can be an achievement in reaching your personal goals. Like a lot of factions, Grey Knights see relatively light changes to their HQs, with almost all the regular ones going up 5pts (technically 6 on the Chaplain because his storm bolter isn’t offset by a melee weapon change), Voldus going up 7 and Draigo by 10. Gerald Cloud. Jabberscythe. At the close of 8th Edition, the double Paladin bomb Grey Knight list was one of the armies to beat. Subscribe to the Frontline Gaming email list! 40k. Paladins are how Grey Knights win GTs. Nemesis falchions are now four points for the pair while everything else is free, so yeah don’t take those any more huh. With the amount of smites one can throw reduced, you might want to flex into some offensive powers, but I went with all the main utility abilities for now. The durability of a Paladin squad starts with its basic terminator armor 2+ armor save and 5++ invulnerable save for these 3 wound models. That all changed with Ritual of the Damned, which via the addition of an absurdly powerful suite of special abilities and stratagems fired them all the way into the big leagues. Between this, across the board point increases and the army construction change, six Strike Squads in every list is dead – they no longer provide such reliable burst damage out of Deep Strike under Tide of Escalation, and you don’t need them to get enough CP to power your abilities. You do also need to be mindful that it’s very likely any opponent without Psykers will be able to max Abhor the Witch easily against you. I don’t think your responding to the right place with this? will have a minimum of 3 attacks total. Relating to the earlier posts about dropping meltas with tauroxes, I was thinking of how you people do that technically. That probably brings them closer to being usable, and there’s definitely some appeal to the legendary teleporting Land Raider in an edition where transports have gone up in value and they can shoot in combat (something that’s especially spicy on the Crusader and Redeemer). Those aren’t the same phrases, and they have different meanings. Brian Moy. Or do you mean Tabletop titans don’t get GK? Grey Knights are one of the top psychic armies on the same level as daemons and eldar. That being said I think GWs intent is to limit the casting of smite to once per psycher per turn, they just didn’t put the line into the rules and it should be FAQed with the first core rules FAQ. For most of 8th Edition, Grey Knights were a bit of a joke. 7 mins read. Played a decent amount of monoscions in 8th and now a few in 9th. Like with almost every faction, there’s probably a bit more play in running Rhinos than there used to be, but here I think you want to adapt to the missions by swapping to Terminators rather than buying Strikes Rhinos. Played 5 games of 9th so far (semi-competitive) against different armies each time, won 4 of them (only lose was against grey knights haha). It’s interesting, but it does compete pretty hard with taking a Terminator Squad since they’re ObSec, and weakens any attempt to build a list that’s all 2+, which you may now want to do. Teleport Strike (1 CP) – Used at the end of the Movement phase to set up to 3 TERMINATOR models from reserves onto the table more than 5″ away from enemy models. Finally, Purgation squads. You’ve also got the one squad optioned on Vortex of Doom to punish any opponent that clusters up too much in the centre of the table. It may well be that the Dreadnought datasheet in the 9th edition Codex: Grey Knights becomes the equivalent of the Venerable Dreadnought. We’ll finish up, as ever, with a couple of army lists, one from me attempting to emulate some of the fun of the dual Paladin bomb in 9th, and one from Ben Cherwien, which took third place at one of the first GT-level events played in 9th. Reply # I don’t get why Ynnari had to be eradicated so brutally. Low body count hits their ability to line up required powers. That gives you an outrageously powerful and tough unit, which is very good in 9th, but my suspicion is that you’ll struggle to justify running two full squads any more. The Grey Knights pulled off a surprise GT win which resulted in the only event without an undefeated player. Where I Think Grey Knights May Land In The Meta: I do not feel Grey Knights will be the kings of the metagame in 40k, though I believe they are about to shake things up. Grey Knights see a surprisingly huge upheaval for such a recent army. Massive point hike on falchions hurts their melee output. Army Construction changes are a significant boost – not being forced to try and build a dual battalion of Strike Marines gives you more flexibility. You might want to consider a single unit as something to shunt around for performing Actions, but there are so many other ways Grey Knights can be mobile that the 23ppm price tag here looks a bit much. Very experience guy. How do you translate “can attempt to manifest more than one psychic power” into “can attempt to manifest the same psychic power more than once”? for an average of 16 wounds. Named characters (such as Lord Kaldor Draigo) cannot be given the following Relics. Laurence, aka Spider is a very competitive player, he heads up the site and the YouTube channel with a team. With the amount of smites one can throw reduced, you might want to flex into some offensive powers, but I went with all the main utility abilities for now. What I think GW is trying to achieve here is, that smite can be cast more than once a phase but by different casters, they just didn’t say that. Note: The overview here references the 9th edition of the rules, published July 2020. Sunday Preview: New Warhammer 40,000 Starter Sets. That certainly provides a heck of a punch, and substantially ups the ranged threat the army can present, which is quite relevant in some matchups. This book is hardcover. Pyroalchi. Grey Knights end up in a slightly odd place. Character targeting changes hurt them quite a lot. He plays at LVO, ITC and the GTs around the world. Two big changes have hurt Grey Knights. Mainly single bat with kappic or 133rd, triprime 4xfull plasma 2xfull hotshot melta commands 4-5 tauroxes 2-3 valks 9th is rough so far, the tauroxes perform ok with the insave from 133rd, and are … 9th edition 36 shots for one dead tactical marine, costing 67.5 points of lasgun shots to kill that marine To kill a single tactical squad in 9th takes 100 guardsmen in 12 inches and 3 company commanders, 3 platoon commanders, and a special charcter with an extra command to order all of then to first rank fire second rank fire. The next part is specifically phrased to make smite cast more than once possible, “If the Psycher unit can attempt to manifest more than one psychic power in its Psychic phase, you can then attempt to manifest those, one at a time, as describe above.” Again there is not limit to different power or anything here (although I think they should have added it), as it is defined before this in the same Psychic Phase rules, that powers can only be cast once a turn except smite. This is open and shut that you are allowed to manifest smite more than once. I have played a lot of games of 9th edition and have faced a number of different types of armies and playing styles. Next post … ... Who knows but it feels like one of those old 5th edition lists when Grey Knights were high in fashion. That’s the bad news – the good news is that several other things the Grey Knights can do go up in value. If you don’t think they’re ready to try and take the centre in force you want probably want to deploy: If you go first, you want to try and get off one volley of Astral Aimed Tide of Convergence Psybolt Ammunition from the big squad via using Edict Imperator prior to switching to shadows, and to move them onto a middle objective at the same time, ideally trailing out models far enough to still screen Voldus and the Apothecary. Grey Knights have been called boring, bland and repetitive and this is certainly true to an extent in the basic template of the army. You already saw these in lists as “one more character”, and I don’t see that changing. A resounding “meh”. First up in Heavy Support we have, naturally, the Land Raiders. This is the 4th update to the new Codex Compendium for 9th edition. I do want to see if anyone managed to reconfigure a list that makes Strike Marines work, but in the meantime I’d suggest swinging hard towards the more elite options you have access to – the success of this list demonstrates that they can be really made to work. Strike Marines go up three points each, and are a bit more constrained in terms of upgrades. Bmoy here with our initial thoughts on this morning’s Grey Knights reveal in Ritual of the Damned. They are the champions of reason, order and righteousness, holding back daemons and the scions of the Dark Gods. Blood Angels Tactics 9th Edition. The same goes for Eliminators to eliminate key units. Grey Knights Tactics and Strategies. Obviously, up front, this could still change in the main rulebook FAQ whenver it comes, but my expectation would have been for it to be bolted onto the Brotherhood of Psykers ability in the codex FAQ if it was going to be. Pop the +1 to wound stratagem to wound the Knight on 3s. Dustin Henshaw was clearly in the running after going undefeated for 5 rounds. This is my second article discussing that new Grey Knights list. The first part of your response, “can attempt to manifest more than one psychic power”, doesn’t limit what you cast at all, if you look at the complete quote it says, “If the Psycher can attempt to…you can then attempt to manifest those, one at a time, as describe above” that just says if you have the ability/permission to do it than you can. You guys don’t know GK and it shows. The guns are also pretty good against armies like Death Guard, which are looking popular early on. Man I missed you two doing reports together. The changes to coherency make moving around 6+ model units slightly annoying and you have to pay more attention to casualty pulls, but more than likely this will get easier with experience. The initial detection of daemonic infestation is left to the Inquisitors of the Ordo Malleus, but the majority of combat is wisely left to the Chamber Militant. If your army is led by a GREY KNIGHTS Warlord, you can give one of the following Relics of Titan to a GREY KNIGHTS CHARACTER model from your army instead of giving them a Relic from Codex: Grey Knights. Many players, especially Chaos players clutching their Daemon Engines to their chests and gently rocking back and forth, are probably wondering if that’s still going to be the case going into 9th Edition. Overall, the reveals have me very excited about the direction of Grey Knights and believe that combined with CA2019, Ritual of the Damned will help put Grey Knights in a position to be much more competitively viable and interesting. There’s still basically no reason to take these – the fighters don’t really synergise with any of the rest of the army, while the Stormraven is probably too many points in one basket, hilarious though it is. 9th edition and its focus on durable units to claim and hold objectives already made them less valuable, but this probably kills them. One other thing that I think needs mentioning, Bring it Down is really good at making a 10 man terminator/paladin unit deal heavy damage to a Knight with shooting when combined with Tide of Convergence and psycannons/psybolt storm bolters. Grey Knights have a whole array of tricks to make tough models even tougher (dropping Redoubtable Defence on a squad of 5 is cheap and makes them a pain to remove in particular), and this gives them a very effective way to mess with the objectives. Older versions of this list avoided the Dreadknights, but here I think you want one just so you have something that can trash a Knight or similar in combat, as losing the ability to reliably burst them down with Smites is a big problem. There are always going to be winners and losers, as far as worthwhile units are concerned, but Grey Knights, have always been victims of very poor internal balancing, from my foxhole. The big, obvious difference here is that this list eschews any attempt at Paladin nonsense in favour of two more Dreadknights. Hello Warriors of the Greater Good. Let me start by saying that everyone plays differently and there is no golden standard or secret meta formula that will always guarantee a win. Like all armies, Grey Knights have some objectives they’re especially well suited to, and some they’re a bit less keen on.
